The course this year wants us to focus on a new version of beauty and adopt a very experimental approach when researching and creating our own designs. An anthropological approach (looking at different cultures) is also going to be included to help inspire and broaden our studies.
Transformation:
- The act or an instance of transforming.
- A marked change in appearance or character. (Usually for the better.)
Types of transformation:
We were asked to reference a film featuring human transformation plus a plant and animal transformation within our research to try show our understanding of the term.
Plastic surgery/special effects is used all the time throughout the film and music industry as everyone battles to have the most outrageous, eye catching and modern designs included in their music video or film. For example Angelina Jolie's make-up done by Rick Baker in the film 'Maleficent.'
Lady Gaga is also seen with the same look in her music video 'Born this way' released in 2012. However hers were said not to be prosthetics but to have been actual implants embedded under the cheeks and in the forehead.
As a very individual artist her appearance is never a shock to fans or viewers as her main appeal and selling approach is her weird and wonderful style. People are having to reinvent themselves constantly in order to compete with other artists, this results in more interesting make-up approaches as prosthetics and other daring facial sculpting elements are trending, becoming more normal to see on an average, everyday beings.
The point was discussed in class that as we get older more people will be seen wearing facial implants as many believe subdermal implants will become a new fashion trend. However I don't agree, the look itself is very outrageous. I think it would take a very daring, confident person to wear one as every head would turn to look in your direction. Many people today conform and dress how shops are telling or just dress the same as every other person so I doubt that people would suddenly grow confidence and go to the opposite end of the spectrum and wear subdermal implants.
Subdermal implants: refers to a kind of body jewellery that is place under the skin. The body then heals over the implant resulting in a raised area of skin.
Low tech prosthetics:
Both Bart and Lucy have gone on to do there own individual work now. Bart created the goo seen in Lady Gaga's 'Born this way' video during the birth scene.
Lucy has invented her own unique, 'swallow-able parfum.' A cosmetic capsule you can swallow that is slowly released throughout the day instead of having to reapply perfume.

Low tech prosthetics:
Lucy McRae and Bart Hess are an example of people who use low tech make-up and experiments. They worked as a duo for some projects and devised some very interesting and unique designs on the human body using low tech prop and house hold items.

Aims:
- To research and create more grotesque versions of beauty
- Look beyond casual beauty
- Design thinking- restriction free thinking
Plant transformation:
I chose to study the transformation of a Yellow Dandelion flower and the time lapse within it turning from the flower into a seed head. It's time lapse is pretty simple and basic as it grows from a small green weed then opens up to be a yellow flower. It then reverses the process and returns to its original form- closed. Which then opens again to become the seed head. It's interesting that a dandelion is considered a weed as its appearance isn't all that ugly as weeds are typically seen and known to be. Both the transformation from the yellow flower to the seed head are both very different appearances which makes the transformation all that more interesting.
Animal transformation:
For my animal transformation I chose to look at the transformation of egg to chicken.
- They must rest at a cool temperature for at least 12 hours before incubation.
- The eggs are then placed in an incubator.
- The incubation temperature is 99.5 - 100 degrees F. Humidity is between 50% and 60%.
- The eggs are then turned three times a day to prevent embryo morality.
- Day 4 - Candling - where you can see the development of an egg from the inside.
- Day 6 - The veins begin to grow out and surround the interior of the egg.
- Day 12 - The embryo takes up more than half the egg.
- Day 15 - The embryo gets in the correct position for hatching.
- Day 16 - The embryo takes up nearly the entire egg, it becomes hard to see through.
- Day 18 - The eggs no longer have to be turned and are laid on their sides. Humidity must be increased.
- Day 19 - The embryo takes its first breath of air. It's beak is seen in the air cell.
- Day 21 - Hatching
Transformation within a film:
Bella Cullen's transformation from a fit and healthy being to frail, dying being is really interesting in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 (2011.) Kristen Stewart plays Bella Swan. I'm not sure 100% whether they used the fake stunt double dolly through her dying scene however the resemblance is identical to the actress. With the obvious changes such as her gaunt face and much skinnier physique due to the illness. Its remarkable how realistic the double looks on set.
